Brown Seaweed Health Benefits and Fucoidan

What is fucoidan?

Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide which is found in brown seaweed such as mozuku , wakame, and kombu (Laminaria japonica). It is a common element of kelp (general name for brown seaweed) and other sea plants.

The "slimy" component of seaweeds is a rich source of fucoidan, which is a general term referring to a group of polysaccharides containing sulfated fucose - an essential sugar.

Numerous studies have found that polysaccharides, a class of dietary fiber contained in brown algae, have many health benefits.

In Japan, fucoidan extracted from brown seaweed has been clinically shown to increase natural killer cell activity as well as improve activation of macrophage, T-cells and B-cells.

Refer to the Immune System page for definitions of immune system cells and basic facts about immune system functions and disorders.

Ancient secrets of a coastal diet.

People in Pacific coastal societies have enjoyed the wonderful health benefits of the fucoidan polysaccharide for centuries. For example, the population of Okinawa, the southernmost prefecture of Japan, is known to have the highest rate of longevity in Japan.

According to the National Cancer Center of Japan, Okinawa is also where the mortality rate from all cancer types is one of the lowest in the nation. On the National Cancer Center website you can find cancer statistics for Japan.

Scientists believe that the reason for this health phenomenon is the unique diet of the Okinawan people, that includes fish, soy foods (tofu) and a variety of vegetables and sea plants, including kombu (brown seaweed that has very long leaves).

Coastal communities can benefit from fucoidan because of their diet, rich in brown seaweed and other sea plants.Today everyone can take advantage of this wonderful natural ingredient by using dietary supplements with fucoidan.

Scientific research proposes that many health conditions could be positively impacted by the regular consumption of fucoidan.

Among the conditions that can be affected are: immune system modulation, cancer, heart disease, rheumatism and arthritis (types of inflammation), high blood pressure, infectious disease, gastrointestinal function, and more

Immune system modulation

One of the primary ways in which fucoidan can benefit your health is in its ability to interact with, and modulate the immune system. The ability of a substance to modulate the immune system is extremely useful.

Modulation is a term used to describe the process of reducing the extremes of cellular activity – either stimulation or inhibition. Immune modulating substances have the ability to work in both directions. They can boost the immune system when it is depressed (referring to conditions such as chronic fatigue) and can also suppress the immune system when it is over-stimulated (such as in the case of autoimmune diseases like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis).

Most immune modulating agents work by improving inter-cellular communication. One way that cells communicate is by presenting on their surface complex, information-rich protein (glycoprotein) macromolecules linked with molecules of saccharides or sugars (polysaccharides). An inter-cell “message” depends on the structure of saccharides.

For example, one message might tell a cell to start producing specific chemicals, and another message might tell a cell when to divide. Cells have glycoprotein receptor molecules, which can read messages from other cells and respond accordingly.

The immune system depends heavily on this kind of communication to co-ordinate cellular defense, apoptosis, cell attack and repair processes. When any of saccharides required to build capable glycoprotein – and thereby to pass on a correct message – is missing, the quality of that communication is jeopardized.

It has been shown that a dietary supply of certain saccharides from brown seaweed improves the integrity of glycoprotein production. Fucoidans provide an abundant supply of fucose, one of the necessary saccharides, and also provide smaller amounts of several other required sugars. This is likely to be one mechanism which enables the fucoidans to have their immunomodulatory effect.

Below is a partial list of potentially significant health and wellness benefits of fucoidan that is extracted from different kinds of brown seaweed.

Help in maintaining immune system health

Fucoidan supports the immune system in a number of ways. Some research suggests that it may cause an increase in the number of white blood cells, which are an integral part of the body's natural immune system.

Findings from other studies suggest that fucoidan supports the immune system by activating important immune responses, such as phagocytosis - a process by which phagocytes “swallow” enemy cells or microbes.

Inducing process of eliminating harmful cells

Fucoidan may also prove helpful in eliminating harmful cells through a process called apoptosis.

Apoptosis is a term for the programmed process of a cell "bursting" and dying. Sulfated polysaccharides like fucoidan have been shown to assist in inducing appropriate programmed apoptosis, which is a natural process where living organisms eliminate harmful cells.

The ability to induce apoptosis is desirable, for example, when attempting to kill tumor tissue.

Cell regeneration

Much of the fucoidan research has focused on its ability to support processes of cell regeneration.

There is evidence that fucoidan might support mobilization of stem cells that enable replacing of dead cells in the body. This would also enable enabling tissue and organ regeneration.

Here is a sample study about using fucoidan for stem cells mobilization.

The study concludes that the use of sulfated glycans, including fucoidan "represents a powerful, novel method for rapid mobilization of long-term-repopulating stem cells."

Support of the circulatory system and health functions

Fucoidan has also been shown to support healthy blood flow and cardiac functions. Sustained strong blood flow helps your body organs work more efficiently and helps you feel better and healthier. Efficient functioning of our vital organs essentially helps us reduce the effects of "wear and tear" of the normal aging process.

Additionally, one study suggested that fucoidan helps slow the absorption rate of glucose, into the blood stream. A slower absorption rate means a more regulated blood sugar level that minimizes the potential damage caused by high blood sugar levels.

Maintain normal cholesterol levels

Your body produces a "good" cholesterol (HDL) and a "bad" cholesterol (LDL). Optimum health is achieved when you can maintain LDLs and HDLs in the normal range.

There is some evidence suggesting that fucoidan can help us maintain existing healthy levels of cholesterol by influencing the metabolic activity in the liver where fatty acids are processed.

In this study from Japan a brown seaweed (wakame) was tested. Conclusion from the research: "... wakame may be useful as a food to prevent hyperlipidemia."

(Hyperlipidemia is a condition of excess levels of fatty substances called lipids, largely cholesterol, in the blood.)

Detoxification and antioxidant potential

The negative effects that free radicals have on our bodies are well documented.

The beneficial effect of antioxidants in helping neutralize the oxidative stresses placed upon our organs and metabolic processes is also very clear.

Fucoidan has a long list of health and wellness properties, not the least of which is that it is also a potent antioxidant.

The study explored potential antioxidant capacity of fucoidan from Fucus vesiculosus (another brown seaweed). The conclusion: "Sulfated polysaccharides from edible seaweeds potentially could be used as natural antioxidants by the food industry."

Overcoming Chronic Inflammation

I am excites to introduce Greg Carver to you. His extensive knowledge in Health issues will bring much value to Funk Roberts Fitness. Read more about Greg below the article.

Article by Greg Carver

Time magazine has called “inflammation” the secret killer.

From personal experience, I can say the magazine article is probably dead-on correct. While I had heard that chronic inflammation had been linked to everything from heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s – I’ll admit that it didn’t register right away. But when I started to develop my own chronic symptoms that couldn’t be explained, and didn’t go away – I started to pay closer attention to the subject.

It’s hard to believe that only three or four years ago, I was plagued by pain in my joints and leg muscles. I was in a stage of my life where I couldn’t get past a single day without taking Advil or another pain-relieving drug. It’s almost embarrassing to admit now, but less than four summers ago I was eating Advil almost like it was candy, because every four to five hours the pain would return. Multiple trips to various physicians didn’t shed much light on the problem, tests came up negative and all they could do was to continue to monitor my situation.

Frustrated, I took my case to functional nutritionist and homeopathic doctor Bryce Wilde. I wasn’t so much interested in homeopathy, but I knew that Dr. Bryce approached problems from a holistic perspective and, based on his reputation and successes in treating people, I was intrigued to see what he could do with my case.

After a thorough consultation, booked in several sessions where we covered my individual issues, history, habits, lifestyle, etc., an evaluation was completed and a plan for treatment was given to me. While chronic inflammation wasn’t the singular culprit that was nagging me at the time, it was certainly thought to be paramount. Given the link between diet, nutrition, and inflammation, Dr. Bryce wasted no time in sorting out my ‘gut’.

Digestive support was the first thing to tackle. We started with a pharmaceutical-grade probiotic to restore the healthy bacteria in my stomach. I was given a list of nutritional supplements to take, and instructed to take two teaspoons of fish oil per day. Marine oils are the kings of well being! Finally, I was given some general guidelines for an ‘anti-inflammatory’ diet.

What a difference a few months made! All joint pain, leg pain, creaky knees, stiffness in the joints disappeared completely. I was able to stop taking pain relievers within a month of starting the treatment – and haven’t taken a single dose since – almost three years later. When I started adding regular exercise into my regime, things improved even more (I’d been ‘going to the gym’ for years, but was sidelined for a long time due to pain). Squats, deadlifts, presses, kettlebell workouts, general physical preparedness (GPP) training, metabolic conditioning, muscular endurance routines, cardio workouts, tabata intervals, yoga – I hit it all now. And my joints and muscles have never been stronger or healthier.

What can you do to keep inflammation at bay?
Proper nutrition plays a key role, as many foods are inflammation protagonists.

Here are some pointers:

i) Take a good fish oil supplement twice a day. I use liquid Nutra Sea fish oil from Ascenta Health.

ii) Get plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from natural sources, including fresh wild salmon or canned sockeye salmon, sardines, herring, omega-3 eggs, avocados, hemp seeds and/or ground flaxseeds.

iii) Include nuts and other seeds in your diet, including walnuts, almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. Restrict consumption of peanuts (they are a legume, not a nut).

iv) Avoid trans-fats, hydrogenated oils, margarine and vegetable oils and shortenings like the plague. Use olive oil for salads and low-temperature cooking.

v) Avoid processed or manufactured foods at all costs. Jack LaLanne used to say “If man made it, don’t eat it!”

vi) Reduce intake of foods high in saturated fat. Not all saturated fat is necessarily bad (in fact, your body requires it), but saturated fat should be eaten in moderation. Better sources of saturated fat are coconut milk and virgin coconut oils, organic meats (non-steroid, non-hormonal, pesticide-free fed sources), and limited amounts of natural organic dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt.

vii) Eat carbohydrates with a low glycemic load. This will mean the majority of your carbohydrates will come from vegetables, and to a lesser extent, fruits. Restrict your consumption of grains or grain products. When you do eat grains, stick to whole, unprocessed grains, and preferably consume them directly after exercise. That’s when your body can make use of them to replenish its glycogen stores.

viii) With every meal, choose a lean protein, a vegetable, and a good source of fat (preferably a source of omega-3s). Load up on the fresh vegetables, and include plenty of greens, as well as the other colour groups. Eat lots of cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. Limit consumption of the nightshades (peppers, tomatoes, etc.) until the inflammation is under control.

ix) Eliminate all sugary drinks, including juices. Drink water and green tea instead. Avoid diet drinks and beverages that are filled with chemicals and additives.

x) Regularly eat ginger and turmeric, and include these spices in your recipes. They have been shown to lower inflammation.

xi) Supplement your rich diet with a good anti-oxidant vitamin formula. There are some specific immune support formulas that are excellent too; consult your natural doctor.

xii) Choose organic and local produce, where possible. Eat clean and stay well!

Following these guidelines helped me, and I hope they help you as well.

YOUTH JUICE AND ASTHMA

One of the great things about YJ is that you can do independent research & see why it works on certain things like asthma & allergies! If you have asthma or allergies you have to be drinking Youth Juice everyday.
Monitoring of patients of all ages, including infants, has validated the effectiveness of Vitamin B12 to be an as an agent to relieve episodes of wheezing. It is not well understood how this vitamin relaxes the airways, however it is effective in suppressing the asthmatic response to allergens or physical exertion, two major causes for the symptoms of asthma.
A Vitamin C deficiency may exacerbate the symptoms of asthma, including shortness of breath, especially when asthma is triggered by physical exertion or allergies. Vitamin C may help relive these symptoms by reducing histamine production or by stimulating the body to increase production of “good” eicosanoids.
Individuals suffering from asthma of this type generally respond to Vitamin C supplementation with fewer attacks and milder symptoms although it should be mentioned here that this therapy does not work for all patients.
In some asthma sufferers the level of Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has been found to below average, especially in those using theophylline-based bronchodilatory medication. Administrating this vitamin seems to relieve shortness of breath, sometimes noticeably.

Molybdenum deficiency often occurs in the individuals who are sensitive to sulfites contained in wine, eggs and other consumables. Molybdenum helps reduce the toxic impact of sulfites, explaining why a molybdenum deficiency can make one more sensitive to the allergen.
To reduce the severity of asthma symptoms triggered by foods that contains sulfites, molybdenum supplementation is recommended.

But no doubt there are people dying from this flu. In fact there are thousands of people yearly that die from the seasonal influenza.

How do we keep our bodies ready for the fight? Wake up our immune system. The best way to fight flu’s, diseases, constant tiredness, body shutdown and hundreds of other ailments is to make sure that our immune system is strong.

We can do this by feeding our body with the proper nutrients and antioxidants it needs on a daily basis.

Antioxidants are essential to good health and Scientists have learned that phytochemicals, including antioxidants, increase our resistance to disease and boost immunity.

ORAC is the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity of food. ORAC provides us with a method of measuring the overall antioxidant power of foods and supplements. Simply put, the higher the ORAC value of food the more antioxidant power it contains.

3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day are required. Studies show that the average person gets only about 1200 ORAC units per day from 3 servings of fruits and vegetables. Hence, the recommendation of 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Now how many of us can eat that many servings per day? Not even me.

Enter Youth Juice, a dietary supplement and a true medical food that not only supplies the full spectrum of required daily vitamins, but also therapeutic levels of anti-oxidants and even fucoidan and ellagitannins, well known cancer fighting agents.

YouthJuice is the most efficient and cost effective way to get your fruits and vegetables. With 123,000 ORAC in every 32oz. bottle, nothing on the market matches the ORAC anti-oxidant value of this super juice.

Youth Juice delivers a stunning fusion of taste and nutritional value. Each serving contains 100% of 19 daily vitamins and minerals most significant for your immune system support.

I am so glad that I have found Youth Juice. I can still testify to this day, that I have yet to be sick since taking this super juice over a year ago and will continue to take and endorse this product forever. I have also been able to add an extra revenue stream for myself, especially during these economic times.

If you, your kids and family members need to wake up your immune system and protect yourself from the Swine Flu and seasonal flu then you need to add Youth Juice to your daily diet.

HERE IS A SWINE FLU COMMERCIAL FROM 1976.

REMEMBER YOU ARE NEVER TOO FAST FOR THE SWINE FLU

Swine flu, a virus that normally infects pigs, has been detected in people in Mexico, the U.S., New Zealand, Canada, and the U.K. Health officials around the world are checking to see whether infections have occurred in their countries, and readying measures to prevent its spread.

What is swine flu? A: Influenza is a virus that infects people, birds, pigs and other animals such as ferrets. Swine flu, or swine influenza, is a form of the virus that normally infects pigs. There are many forms of flu, and the different varieties have the ability to exchange genes with one another.

The form of flu that originated in Mexico is a genetic mixture of viruses that have been seen in pigs, birds and people. It’s being called a swine flu because the overall structure of the virus is of the type that affects pigs, said Keiji Fukuda, a WHO official.

ELLAGIC ACID HAS PROVEN HEALTH BENEFITS

ELLAGIC ACID HAS PROVEN HEALTH BENEFITS
by: echarter on Streetdirectory.com - Health

The ellagic acid is a chemical compound found in fruits and vegetable like raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts and other plant foods. The ellagic acid is considered to be an antioxidant. Nowadays, it is widely promoted on the Internet and other medias as a means of preventing and treating cancer.

Recent researches have proven that it slows the growth of some tumours caused by certain carcinogens in cell cultures and lab animals. But still, there is no scientific evidence that it can prevent or treat cancer, although it seems to have some anti-cancer properties.

It has no side effects and it is known to strengthen the immune system, prevent heart disease, liver fibrosis, promote wound healing, prevent the binding of carcinogens to DNA, strengthen connective tissue-which may keep cancer cells from spreading, and protect the p53 gene from free-radical damage.

Ellagic acid binds cancer-causing chemicals, thus making them inactive. It inhibits the ability of other chemicals to cause mutations in bacteria. In addition to that, it prevents binding of carcinogens to DNA and reduces the incidence of cancer in cultured human cells exposed to carcinogens.

The relative amount of ellagic acid in average number of micrograms per gram of dry weight fruit extract is highest in red raspberries at 1500mcg, followed by strawberries at 639mcg, walnuts at 590mcg, pecans at 330mcg, and cranberries at 120mcg.

Ellagic acid is not naturally present in plants. It is formed as the polymers of the Gallic acid and hexahydroxydipenoyl link with the glucose centers to form compounds known as ellagitannins. The highest amount of ellagitannins can be found in the Meeker red raspberry, hence it is the best source of this acid.

A lot of studies and experiments have been conducted by different universities and labs across to world in order to prove the effects of the ellagic acid.

Most of the experiments with it have been applied to lab animals and plants, but recently Italian researches reported that it seemed to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy in men with advanced prostate cancer, although ellagic acid did not help slow disease progression or improve survival.

To increase the level of ellagic acid in a human organism, the best way is to have a diet that includes five different sources of ellagic acid, instead of using only red raspberries as the only source of ellagic acid. It can also be found in a supplement form, offered by various companies.

FUNK TO SHAVE FACIAL HAIR FOR MOVEMBER

That's right folks, the beard, burns, moustache, everything is GOING, GOING, GONE! Wow, I think it's been 100 years since I had no facial hair, but for Movember, I'm in.
Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a charity event held during November each year.
At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants, known as Mo Bros, have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache, raising money and awareness along the way.
Movember culminates at the end of the month at the Gala Partés. These glamorous and groomed events will see Alex Trebek look-a-likes battle it out on the catwalk for their chance to take home the prestigious Man of Movember title.

While growing a Mo is left to the guys, Mo Sistas (women that support their guys or just love Mos!) form an important part of Movember with their powerful feminine touch, by recruiting Mo Bros, helping to raise funds and attending the highly anticipated Gala Partés.
But it's not all fun and games, so why the extreme behaviour?
Which ever way we look at it, men are far less healthy than women. The average life expectancy for men is five years less than females.

Men lack awareness about the very real health issue they face. Many feel they have to be tough - "a real man" - and are reluctant to see a doctor about an illness or to go for regular medical check ups.
The aim of Movember is to change this attitude. Make men's health fun by putting the moustache back on the face of Canadian men and raising some serious funds for prostate cancer.
Every year around 24,700 Canadian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 4,300 die of the disease, making it the number one cancer threat to Canadian men.
Movember is very proud to be partnering with the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada

All donations made will go directly to the Prostate Cancer Research Foundation of Canada who will use the funds to create awareness and fund research for prostate cancer.
I will teaming up with my crew from Workopolis to help fight Prostate Cancer. I can just see it now, an entire office of guys with moustaches....classic!
Oh and at the end of Movember, when I see you all at one of the many Galas, be prepared for Funk to look like this:

YOUTH JUICE - STAY HEALTHY AND MAKE MONEY

Over the past few months I have been taking a daily supplement called Youth Juice (YJ), every morning. You like that name huh….YOUTH JUICE. My cousin, Kieron, from Calgary, had sent me a case of 4 bottles, and asked me to start taking it and then let him know my thoughts.

SIMPLY AMAZING!

I started to read more about the product, its ingredients and benefits.

Just imagine getting 100% of your vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidant, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying qualities, all in a 3oz serving per day.

There have been times where I will wake up with a massive real hang-over from a party the night before and after taking my Youth Juice serving an hour later, I’m UP AND AT EM!

Youth Juice was developed in cooperation with a grant for research and development from the Canadian Government. It features two ingredients that are significant in nutritional science, Ellagic acid and Fucodian. Youth Juice is designed with health in mind. Its ingredients were specifically chosen for their clinically proven results to delay the onset of Alzheimer's and Cancer

Youth Juice is a scientifically engineered, all natural whole food supplement. Made of 7 whole organic wild berries and 3 marine sea vegetables. All of the natural products that help to enhance your immune system and fight off today's "super bugs".

It has a 13,000 ORAC score which means it in every 3oz serving your getting a huge dose of antioxidants which help clear your body of free radicals.

If you have kids, this product is essential. YJ in their bodies provide the necessary nutrition that is lacking. Daily we are missing out on essential nutrients with the things we eat, or don’t eat. Once they start taking YJ, the other parents will wonder why your kids never gets sick and why they're doing better in school because they have the energy to pay attention in class.

There are so many reasons why you should be drinking this I can't tell you enough.

MAKE MONEY - NOW FOR THE GOOD STUFF
http://www.ourworldnetwork.com/funkroberts

The best part about Youth Juice is the fact that it is being distributed by word of mouth instead of corporate marketing campaigns. There are no commercials, print ads, or posters for Youth Juice.

I am always looking for other ways to supplement my income, especially when the economy is not looking good to say the least.

When my cousin told me that I can make some money by becoming a distributor and get paid to drink and share Youth Juice with others, at first I was skeptical. I have done network marketing before with Melalucca. I did like the products but because there was so much to sell, I got just lost.

Youth Juice on the other hand, is one product and it sells itself, because of the health benefits. I like telling people about the YJ and the opportunity to supplement your current income with about 2-3 hours work per week.

This business is unlike anything I've seen before. You can make your money back in as little as 60 days. You can start earning commissions and bonuses without having to spend a lot of hours starting a new business. Get paid to drink a great product with health enhancing properties.

You hear about all these success stories of people that you do not know and how they are making thousands of dollars extra per month or week.

Well, my success story is my cousin Keiron, who, prior to Youth Juice, has a successful California Kitchens franchise and painting company, but when he heard about YJ, it was no-brainer. He only started near the beginning of 2008 and is already at $5000/month (which is residual income) and is on his first month of driving a free Porsche.

We all want more time to do the things that make us happy, to live the life that we want. Start enjoying life instead of watching it pass you by. Why not invest into your future by getting healthy, building wealth, and sharing this same opportunity with your friends and family.

The Amazing Health Benefits of Sea Vegetables

The Amazing Health Benefits of Sea Vegetables
By Kristie Leong M.D., published Jun 11, 2008

You probably already realize the importance of eating your vegetables but there's a whole group of healthy greens that have been virtually ignored by the dining public who have yet to discover the amazing benefit of vegetables from the sea. Sea vegetables are not only low in calories but offer health benefits not seen with other types of vegetables. What are the health benefits of sea vegetables and why should you be eating more of them?

Sea vegetable health benefits: They provide for optimal thyroid function
Sea vegetables are rich in the important mineral iodine. Without this critical mineral, the thyroid can't produce sufficient levels of thyroid hormone which is important for regulating metabolism and maintaining life. If you've seen someone with a large goiter, chances are they're deficient in iodine and would benefit from adding fresh sea vegetables to their diet. Concerned about maintaining thyroid health? You can help to optimize your own thyroid function by adding sea vegetables to your diet.

Sea vegetable health benefits: They have anti-inflammatory properties
Brown seaweed as well as several other sea vegetables, contains a biochemical known as fucoidan which has anti-inflammatory properties. Fucoidan may help to tame the inflammatory response that's thought to be responsible for a variety of chronic diseases including cancer. Just one more reason to add seaweed to your diet.

Sea vegetable health benefits: They help to detoxify
A component of sea vegetables known as alginate has been shown to be effective in treating exposure to heavy metals and radiation. Alginates seem to have the capability of binding to and helping flush out of the body heavy metals and radio nucleotides, thus reducing the ability of these components to cause DNA damage and disease. One of the best sources of heavy metal fighting alginate is kelp, available at most natural food markets.

Sea vegetable health benefits: They may reduce the risk of cancer
According to research conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health, sea vegetables may reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Sea vegetables are a source of lignans which can bind to and block estrogen receptors on the breast, reducing their ability to stimulate breast tissue. Fucoidan found in kelp has also been shown to interfere with the ability of cancer cells to proliferate.

Sea vegetable health benefits: They may reduce the risk of heart disease and hypertension
Sea vegetables are a rich source of potassium which is important for maintaining a normal blood pressure. When blood pressure levels are maintained within normal ranges, this puts less stress on the heart which helps to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Don't forget that you can get some of the health benefits of sea vegetables not only by eating the vegetable itself but by adding a variety of seaweed based seasonings to prepared foods. It's just one more way to get healthy naturally.

YouthJuice™ is the perfect blend of 10 fruits and vegetables harvested from our lands and oceans. A daily 3oz drink contains all the vitamins and minerals that are most significant for your immune system support. There is no focus on a single exotic miracle ingredient because life doesn’t work that way. Successful living is based on achieving balance and harmony – utilizing the best of all worlds.
Contact me for more information on how you can get some YouthJuice or take advantage of opportunities to become a personal distributor and make some extra money.

Small-fruit season has finally arrived!

It's a golden opportunity to enjoy not only the exquisite taste of these delicious berries, but also their numerous health benefits

Whether it's strawberries, raspberries, blueberries or blackberries, certain molecules present in these delicious fruits have multiple anticancer properties that can help prevent this disease.

We now know in order to progress, tumours require a new network of blood vessels that allows them to access the oxygen and nutrients they need to grow.

To generate this new network, cancer cells release chemical signals that attract the cells of the blood vessels present nearby and force them to make their way toward them to produce new vessels.

Since tumours largely depend on their energy requirements, blocking these new blood vessels is a weapon of choice to prevent them from gaining the strength necessary to allow their growth, and thus maintaining them in a microscopic and inoffensive state.

In other words, it is possible to prevent the growth of tumours by subjecting them to a very strict diet!

Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are not only delicious fruits, but are also food sources of several polyphenols, such as ellagic acid and delphinidin, two molecules that block angiogenesis.

Research work conducted over recent years in our laboratory has shown these two molecules interfere with this process by blocking the activity of the proteins essential to the migration of the blood vessels' cells toward the tumours.

By blocking these proteins' function, ellagic acid and delphinidin prevent the vessels' cells from participating in the formation of the new blood network close to the tumours and, consequently, deprive them from their supply in oxygen and nutritious molecules.

Since all cancers depend on this blood supply, we can consider ellagic acid and delphinidin as extremely important prevention tools, capable of slowing down the development of a large range of cancers.

Small fruits are the only food sources that allow an important input in ellagic acid and delphinidin.

There is therefore no argument that the regular consumption of these foods is a prerequisite to take advantage of their cancer prevention benefits.

Ellagic acid is present in large quantities in strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, while delphinidin is mostly found in blueberries and blackberries.

The simultaneous presence of ellagic acid and delphinidin in blackberries is especially interesting and makes these small fruits precious allies in the fight against cancer.

There are many ways to prepare berries.

Whether you eat them without anything on them, enjoy them in a mousse, add them to yogurts or even make jams with them, these fruits are always a delight.

If you wish to enjoy as often as possible the anticancer properties of the molecules associated with small fruits, you can even freeze them for future use since the anticancer molecules they contain react well to freezing.

Take advantage of summer to rediscover these fabulous fruits, whose extraordinary taste has no cause to be jealous of that of exotic fruits!

10 WAYS TO KICK UP YOUR METABOLISM

Here’s welcome news: You may have inherited your mom’s slow-mo metabolism, but you’re not stuck with it. New research shows you can trick your body into burning calories more efficiently, especially if you hit the gym. By strength-training just a couple of times a week, for example, you’ll reverse 50 percent of the seemingly inevitable metabolism slow-down that comes with age. So take control of your metabolism by making these boosters part of your routine.

1. Kick it up a notch
The next time you run, swim, or even walk, ramp up the intensity for 30-second intervals, returning to your normal speed afterward. Using this strategy will help you consume more oxygen and make your cell powerhouses, the mitochondria, work harder to burn energy.

2. Get your omega-3s
Why does eating lots of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (salmon, herring, and tuna) help amp up metabolism? Omega-3s balance blood sugar and reduce inflammation, helping to regulate metabolism. They may also reduce resistance to the hormone leptin, which researchers have linked to how fast fat is burned. You can take omega-3 fatty acid supplements.

3. Make some muscle
Not only does muscle weigh more than fat, but it uses more energy, too. The average woman in her 30s who strength-trains 30 to 40 minutes twice a week for four months will increase her resting metabolism by 100 calories a day.

4.Turn to (green) tea
Green tea has long been heralded for its antioxidant polyphenols. But new evidence shows the active ingredient, catechin, may crank up metabolism. Researchers conducted a series of studies in dieters and found that those who went green lost more weight than those who didn’t, suggesting that catechins may improve fat oxidation and thermogenesis, your body’s production of energy, or heat, from digestion. Drink five eight-ounce cups of green tea a day and you can increase your energy expenditure by 90 calories a day. Sounds like a lot of tea, but it’s not hard to do if you also drink it iced.

5.Don’t slash those calories
It’s one of the most frustrating realities of dieting—if you cut out too many calories, your metabolism thinks times are lean and puts the breaks on fat-burning to conserve energy. Here’s the trick to keeping your metabolism revved up while dieting: Eat enough calories to at least match your resting metabolic rate (what you’d burn if you stayed in bed all day; calculate yours here) That’s about 1,330 calories for a 5-feet-4-inch, 150-pound, 40-year-old woman.

6. Enjoy the afterburn
Exercise is a gift to yourself that keeps on giving. In a phenomenon known as excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), your body can take hours to recover from a robust workout (one intense enough that you can’t hold a conversation) and return to its previous resting metabolic rate. The windfall: Your body is actually burning more calories than it normally would—even after you’ve finished exercising.

7. Get started in the a.m.
Make sure you eat breakfast. Eating a nutrient-rich morning meal (like oatmeal with almonds and berries, or a spinach-and-feta omelet with a slice of whole-grain toast) shortly after getting out of bed literally wakes up your metabolism. Eating breakfast gets teh energy going and keeps it going.

8. Go ahead and graze
Noshing throughout the day is a proven strategy to help you curb hunger and eat fewer calories overall. Now, experts are promoting nibbling versus gorging as a way to keep metabolism running by holding blood sugar levels steady and preventing weight-gain-promoting insulin spikes. Enjoying six small meals a day should do the trick; keep them around 300 calories each, or divide your usual day’s calories by six.

9. Trim the trans fat
You’ve heard they’re bad for you. But trans fats also slow down your body’s ability to burn fat. “They have an altered shape and make your biochemistry run funny,” Hyman says, explaining that trans fat binds to fat and liver cells and slows metabolism. Eating trans fat can also lead to insulin resistance and inflammation, both of which cripple metabolism and can cause weight gain.

10. Think protein
Your body digests protein more slowly than fat or carbs, so you feel full longer (this is especially true when you have it for breakfast). Plus, it may also give your metabolism a bump. Take a protien supplement if you can't get it through natural foods.

6 HEALTH MYTHS THAT YOU SHOULD IGNORE

It seems like the scope of fitness and nutritional advice from, professionals, celebrities and scientific health pros are limitless. But there are some things that just don’t make sense. Funk has compiled six health myths and why we should ignore them.

1. THE LESS FAT YOU EAT, THE BETTER – There are four different kinds of fats: Saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and trans-fat. . Avoid saturated and trans-fats, which are associated with the increase blood cholesterol. The other two fats, however, lower blood cholesterol, increase nutrient absorption and enhance food flavour. AN adult should have about 65 grams or less of fat each day. Less than a third of that should be “bad” fats, so stay away from processed foods. Supplement your meals with healthy fats found in foods like avocado, almonds and olive oil.

2. HIGH-PROTEIN, LOW-CARB DIETS ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE FOR WEIGHT LOSS – While the low-carb diet has long been a trendy option, it cannot support optimal health for long. Restricting essential carbohydrates prevents you from getting the vitamins and minerals that you need to keep your body healthy. Adequate carbohydrates must be consumed daily to restore glycogen levels.

3. YOU CAN LOSE AND MAINTAIN WEIGHT WITHOUT EXERCISE AND YOU CAN EAT WHATEVER YOU WANT IF YOU DO EXERCISE – Both myths are a recipe for unhealthy living. You can lose weight without exercise, but cutting calories to the extreme will only lead to eating disorders. And as good as physical activity is for you, if you don’t couple it with a proper diet, it won’t help you lose weight. Remember the weight loss only occurs when you burn more calories than you eat.

4. FRUIT AND SPORTS DRINKS ARE GOOD REPLACEMENTS FOR WATER – Although fruit and sports drinks contain water, they are not replacements for it. Sports drinks overdose in sodium (to replace loss by excessive sweating) and sugar (to supplement depleted carbohydrate reserves). These drinks should be reserved for athletes who endured extended strenuous workouts. Sports and Fruit drinks add countless calories along with flavour.

5. WHEN FOODS ARE “LOW-FAT” OR “FAT-FREE” YOU CAN EAT AS MUCH OF THEM AS YOU LIKE – Most low-fat and fat-free foods are highly processed. And while they boast less fat, they don’t supply much nutritionally. They contain too many calories because manufacturers add-sugar, flour and starch to replace flavour lost through fat removal. Don’t get duped by a label: Just because a food is lowfat doesn’t mean it’s calorie-free. Eat foods naturally low in fat like vegetables, fruits and whole grains.

6. AVOID LIFTING WEIGHTS BECAUSE THEY WILL MAKE YOU BULK UP – This is a myth that is probably the number one excuse by women looking to avoid weight training. While men gain bulk when they lift, women can weight train to increase muscle definition without looking like a bodybuilder. The reason for the difference is that females have one-tenth the amount of testosterone levels that males have. Women who weight train help themselves lose body fat and build lean muscle. They become stronger, firmer and can strengthen bone density which will help prevent osteoporosis.

The Benefits of Vitamin D

The primary existence of Vitamin D in our bodies is to maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus.
Without vitamin D and calcium, bones can become thin, brittle or soft thus causing a huge impact on one's health. Research also suggests that vitamin D may help maintain a healthy immune system and help regulate cell growth Vitamin D has been found to have anti-cancer properties.
Vitamin D is found in a variety of dietary sources and they are:
  • Butter
  • Dairy products (fortified)
  • Eggs
  • Fish (salmon, sardines and tuna)
  • Fish liver oils
  • Green vegetables
  • Liver
  • Oatmeal
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Vegetable oils
  • Yogurt
Besides a balanced diet to provide our bodies with adequate amounts of vitamin D, another great source is via the sun. UV rays from the sun are found to trigger vitamin D synthesis in skin so roughly 10-15 minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D.
(For longer periods in the sun, always remember to slip, slop and slap!)
Those who have darker skin often have vitamin D deficiencies, particularly in the winter months when their is less sunlight. It's probably a good idea to take a vitamin D supplement.
The recommended daily intake of vitamin D for men is 2.6-3.0 µg/day and for women is 2.0-2.2 µg/day. A deficiency of vitamin D can occur when dietary intake of vitamin D is inadequate or when someone cannot adequately absorb vitamin D from the gastrointestinal tract.
Given the toxicity of vitamin D, it is possible to have an overdose with the most common symptoms being nausea, vomiting, headache and depression, deposition of calcium into internal organs and kidney stones.
For the best health/medical advice, always consult your health care professional.

Four Important Elements of a Fitness and Health Program

Whether your goal is Fat Loss, to become Lean, Toned and Strong, or to gain Size and Strength, there are 4 elements that play an important role for you to succeed in reaching your goals. Weight Training, Aerobic Exercise, Diet & Nutrition and Supplements.

Weight Training
Weight training is the most important trait of weight loss and muscle gain. Did you know that one pound of muscle mass added to your body can burn up to 50 extra calories each and everyday? Lifting weights will burn away the fat during your workout and will continue to do so after you have stopped exercising for the day. The stronger you become the quicker those fat reserves will go away. A good daily stretching program helps to keep the body lean, the muscles limber and you off the injury shelf.

Cardio Exercise
Cardio exercise programs are the primary means of maintaining your heart health and helping you to lose unwanted fat. Whether you walk or run, swim or bicycle, do aerobics, or better yet I prefer lifestyle exercise activities such as tennis, beach volleyball, hiking, dancing, etcetera…they are the type of activities that you don't think of as exercise; they create a passion in your life and will lead to a lasting victory over your weight problems.

Diet and Nutrition
There is no single dietary program that works for all people. You must eat 6 - 7 meals per day and each one should contain protein and carbs. Don't allow yourself to get hungry. Keep your appetite in control with smaller meals and healthy snacks in between.

Supplements
In the quest for your goal, diet supplementation is the last of the elements that you need to add to your regimen. Multivitamins, protein, glutamine and depending on your goal a creatine or weight gain products and a fat burning product are great starts. Supplements make it much easier to get the necessary nutrients to build muscle and can even give you an advantage and enhance your training when taken right and combined with a good diet. Keep in mind to check with you physician before you take some supplements

Make this your lifestyle and remember there is no quick and easy weight loss or muscle gain program. Don’t rush the beat!
